Bond Energy Explorer

Drag two atoms toward each other and watch the potential-energy curve draw itself. Find the bond length, read the bond energy, break and re-form the bond, compare bonds, and score a sketch the way an AP reader would.

Move the atoms, then press Record this point. Record far apart, near the minimum, and too close.

1. Where do the atoms settle?

Start far apart. Bring two H atoms together slowly and record PE at 300, 150, 74 and 50 pm. Where is PE lowest? What happens if you push past it?

2. Does breaking a bond give off energy?

Predict, then pull H₂ apart and watch the energy counter. Then let the atoms fall back. Compare the two numbers.

3. Size or bond order?

Compare H–F with H–I, then C–C with C≡C. For each pair: which minimum sits farther left, and which well is deeper? Then check F–F against Cl–Cl.

4. Beat the reader

Given one curve, place the minimum of a new one. Two points: bond length within ±10 pm, depth within ±20 kJ/mol. Get three in a row.
